Program Description:


John Cabot University, an American liberal arts university in the heart of Rome, welcomes study abroad students in the Fall, Spring, and Summer. With 1,400 students from over 70 countries, the University offers over 400 courses per semester and 130 courses per summer, all taught in English by internationally diverse faculty.

The mission of John Cabot University is to provide an educational experience firmly rooted in the American tradition of the liberal arts and solidly international in orientation. The academic programs are designed to use to the fullest extent the special resources of a multicultural faculty, an international student body, and the extraordinarily rich culture and history of Rome and the surrounding region.



The University can be found in Trastevere, one of Rome’s most beautiful districts. Taken from a Latin phrase meaning "across the Tiber," the name refers to Trastevere's location on the west bank of the city's river. Historically a center for artisans and immigrants as well as the rich and famous (Julius Caesar had a villa here), Trastevere retains its bohemian appeal. Stucco buildings and homes dating from the 16th century drip with ivy, their rose, terracotta, and ochre colors bleached by the Roman sun. Cobblestones line the winding streets, and laundry and flower-filled window boxes hang above the district's narrow alleys.

The Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere serves as the center of the neighborhood's social life. At night the lit façade of the Basilica di Santa Maria (built in the 4th century, Santa Maria is the oldest church in Rome) illuminates the square with its cafes, shops, restaurants, and crowds of people walking after their evening meals.



Trastevere is also the home of the famous Porta Portese Flea Market, wonderful fruit and vegetable markets, and Gianicolo, the second-tallest hill in Rome, which serves up breathtaking views of the city's domes, towers, and ancient monuments.

Among the city’s resources are an abundance of museums, fountains, churches, and architectural monuments. Some of Rome’s most visited sites – including the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Vatican, and Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel – are just a short walk from campus. If you want to live “la vita bella”, the good life, there is no better place than “Roma.”

John Cabot University maintains three campuses in Rome, each with its own distinct personality.

Guarini Campus
Walk through the Porta Settimiana (built in the third century) and you will find JCU's Frank J. Guarini Campus. This historic building takes full advantage of Rome's mild climate, opening onto patios, terraces, and a spacious "Lemon Tree" courtyard surrounded by flowering bougainvillea. Students regularly congregate in these open spaces to study and socialize.



Tiber Campus 
JCU's Tiber Campus, located on the banks of Rome's famous Tiber river and a five-minute walk from Guarini, is a spacious, state-of-the-art building with smart classrooms, the Tiber Café, and JCU offices such as Student Services and Immigration.

Critelli Campus 
Situated in Piazza Giuseppe Gioacchino Belli, the Caroline Critelli Guarini Campus is the first University-owned property. Originally built in 1907, the building features three original frescos by Giovanni Battista Conti. In addition to classrooms, the facility hosts executive offices and a computer lab, and is home to JCU’s recently inaugurated Master of Arts in Art History, the first-US accredited MA in the history of art based entirely in Rome.

At JCU, your academic environment is American, your surrounding community is Italian, and your neighbors come from all over the world. The Office of Housing and Residential Life supports the American belief that students living in a community of their peers benefit both academically and socially. Students choosing to live in JCU Housing will gain a true understanding of how to "do as the Romans do" while studying at an American university.



The housing options available through John Cabot University Housing are the Gianicolo Residence, the Viale Trastevere Apartments, and the Lungara Apartments. For Fall and Spring semesters, External Apartments become available only after the other student residences have reached capacity. It should be noted that, although the External Apartments include the same basic amenities and services as the primary housing options, they are managed by a third party contractor and all related cleaning services and maintenance requests are coordinated and overseen by the third party company.

John Cabot University housing is Italian by nature in every way. Our apartments can have varied floor plans, aesthetics and furnishings. Quiet hours are to be respected and are strictly enforced in an effort to maintain a good rapport with the local community.

Student Services at John Cabot University aims to provide quality, non-academic programs and services in a rich, engaging environment that facilitates student growth and success. Their missions is to address and respond to the needs of our students through providing leadership, support, and co-curricular activities, as well as a variety of programs and services that reflect the JCU identity and values as a multicultural university.  

The Cultural Program encourages all students to take advantage of the many activities and trips it provides throughout the year. These cultural activities and trips have been created to educate students about Italy in a fun, "hands-on" method through local guided tours, Italian cooking classes, visits to the theater, wine tastings, day trips, and weekend trips.



JCU students are integrated in the Roman community and may volunteer in many community service opportunities, such as distributing breakfast, clothing and hygiene items to marginalized communities; empowering women who have been victims of violence through art lessons and self-defense classes; or teaching English, Italian, and computer skills to migrants and refugees. All US passport holders intending to study in Italy for more than 90 days must obtain a Student Visa. Check the website of the Italian Consulate in your area to see their specific requirements. You must schedule an appointment with the Italian Consulate and bring ALL documents listed. If you do not bring all required documents, you will be turned away and asked to come back at a later date.

The Visa Office operates by appointment only. The earliest an appointment can be scheduled is 90 days prior to departure. Do not wait to schedule your appointment! Appointment slots fill up quickly and visa processing can take up to 60 days.
