Tulane students may now earn graded Tulane credit by studying on one of the 80 summer programs offered by the Council on International Educational Exchange. CIEE runs summer programs in over 30 countries.
CIEE summer programs are designed according to themes. Students may select a program to help them intensively develop your language skills, to study a particular topic in great detail with local experts or to find a credit-bearing internship.
Interested students can use the CIEE Website Program Search to research the various program locations and themes. Academic tracks include:
Communications and Journalism
Foreign Language and Area Studies
Health and Medical Studies
Human and Social Sciences
Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)
Teacher Education
Finances: Tulane students will find the program cost on the CIEE program website. The CIEE educational costs will be billed by Tulane and any balance owed to the university is due according to the schedule set forth by the Tulane Accounting Office. Students and parents can access this information through the Gibson online portal. Housing, board (if applicable) and other fees will be billed directly by CIEE due dates will vary. Students will receive information about these due dates after being accepted by the program. In some cases, housing will be paid directly to a landlord based on an agreement made in the host city.
Credits and Grades: Tulane students will be registered at Tulane University during the summer abroad program and earn graded Tulane credits for the work they complete. The grades will appear on the official Tulane transcript but are not factored into the Tulane GPA.
As with approved Tulane semester programs, you are eligible to earn elective credit for all courses taken on CIEE summer programs as long as there is a matching discipline at Tulane. (For example, you would not receive elective credit for a Physical Education or Culinary Arts course because there is no equivalent department at Tulane.) Credit taken abroad on a CIEE Summer Program can count towards your major or minor but the awarding of major or minor credit is wholly at the discretion of the relevant Tulane academic department.
Please note that students are not eligible to receive major or minor credit for courses in the following disciplines:
Business
Law
Application Process: Applying to study abroad on a CIEE program is a two-part process. You will need to complete the application on this website and complete the secondary CIEE application available at http://www.ciee.org. You must complete both applications in order to be considered to study abroad. The Tulane Terra Dotta application and the CIEE application deadline is April 1st.
